The Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass season ended December 31. There are plenty of
fish available out of Virginia Beach in the Atlantic Ocean. Charter boats are
catching loads of ocean Stripers over the 28 inch minimum size. This action
should continue for several weeks.

The past weekend marked an improvement in the size and numbers of Trophy
Rockfish being caught in the Reedville area. Actually, most boats are cruising
south to the "cut channel" area east of Windmill Point. Mild daytime and
nighttime temperatures have kept the water temperature up near the 50 degree
mark. As long as this stays the same, these big fish are likely to stick
around through the end of the season which is December 31. Anglers are
catching the huge stripers mostly by trolling shad bodies, buck tails, or
plugs.

The BIG Rockfish started biting this weekend! Several fish were caught by
trolling near Smith Point. The tournament winning boat caught two fish, both
over 40 pounds! Trolling for big fish should get red hot in the net couple of
weeks.
Chumming at the Northern Neck Reef is producing fish from 25 to 30 inches, as
well as a few Bluefish.

The only word to describe the Labor Day Weekend weather is "Windy!" Hurricane
Frances in the Florida area ( a BIG) low pressure area and a big high pressure
up north causes an east wind of at least 20 miles per hour from Friday thru
Monday. Twenty is not that much wind, unless it lasts for several days. Then
the waves just keep getting bigger and bigger.
There are still Croaker being caught, but not very many. There are also a few
flounder being caught but they are scattered. Striped Bass/Rockfish are being
caught chumming in Maryland and on a catch-and-release basis in Virginia
waters.
Trolling is producing plenty of Bluefish, a few Spanish Mackerel, and some
keeper-sized Rockfish (in MD waters).
The trolling action should continue through September with good results. In
October the Virginia Striped Bass Season opens Chumming should be excellent.
In late November the Trophy Rockfish will come into the Bay from the ocean for
the Grand Finale of the fishing season.

The recent rains have dropped the water temperature from the low 80s to the
upper 80s. If you like bottom fishing, there are still Croaker, Spot, Flounder
and Trout in the area. Tangier Sound has been good for bottom fishing.
Trolling for Blues and Spanish Mackerel has been good around the Cut Channel
off the Rappahannock River and along the eastern channel edge north of Smith
Point. Keeper Rockfish are also being caught trolling in the Maryland waters.
And chumming is working for Rockfish in Maryland.
