Fishing Reports from Captain John Milbourne - Lake Michigan

5-15-2004
Left the harbor today and was greeted by some very large chop, bucked it out to 40 fow and tired of taking them in the wind shield so we reversed course and headed for breakfast. Tried it again at 10 am , the laid down a bit, to 3-4. made it out to 70 fow and set up went 3 for 9 in about 2 hours and the lake started to build again so I put her back into port.

Yesterdays blow really screwed up the water. fished 50 to 125 fow and had 1 knock off till 9 am. lit it up and headed west till we found a break. wasn't hot and heavy but we managed to limit out. Coho, lake trout and steelhead were willing to play. got one really nice laker. Picture is on my home page (ed: and to the right). Great weather to be out today.

The fishing in St. Joseph Michigan Continues to be outstanding with many limit catches coming in short order. All the typical salmon stuff seems to be working as of late and I have been feeding them a steady diet of green dolphin spoons. Our catches have been mostly kings but we are also seeing steelhead, lake trout, Brown trout and Coho's in the  mix. Get out on the lake and enjoy some exciting action !

We had a good day off the dock , Forgot to take fish pictures though. we hit a limit of kings by 9:30 and trolled till 1:30 throwing back who knows how many kings and we kept 3 Coho for supper. After the First 3 fish hit green Dolphins I stacked ''em on every rod. 40 fow bottom 5 foot was best for me.

I wasn't sure we would get the trip in today, woke up to rain and wind. rain quit at 6 Am and we met 2 to 3 footers at the pier heads. we bucked 'em south for a while and set up. the wind picked up to 25 and it was looking like a short trip. 15 minutes into the troll the riggers started to bounce, our total was nine king and a Coho. we pulled lines at 9:40 am. had the lake to ourselves today maybe 10 boats out. Green dolphin mag streaks and raiders did the damage again. took one fish on a mag raider black & glow latter back, all the rest came on the dolphin pattern.

I kicked off my salmon season on Friday. The forecast was for 4-7 foot waves in the morning so I was in no hurry to get to the ramp. Arrived in Benton harbor at about 9 am and got my dock all set up ,rigged some rods and did all the "work" associated with launching the boat. I have to thank Merl for giving me a hand. About 11 am we started down the river. we set up at the pump house and I put the ol' girl on a south troll. fished about a mile and took and nice brown. Then my phone rang and Paul said if I could do a pier pick up He would like to go. As I trolled back to the pier heads we took another Coho and a King. I hour of fishing 3-4. not bad I thought. I went back to where we started out and did a reset. all my surface stuff was dead. we switched over to a deep program and instantly a rigger took a rip. I the next 5 hours we boxed a 3 man limit of Kings, Coho's and browns. One thing that made this an exciting trip was I was planning on fishing the beach for browns. and I brought my Walleye fishing tackle. (5 foot ultra light rods) Ever done Battle with a 16 pound king on a Ultra light rod ? A 3 pound Coho was a good fight. We never broke off a fish until the last bite of the day, a nice king took a hot-n-tot off a board, the battle ensued, and the line broke. I wanted my board back so we pulled rods real quick like and ran over to pick it up. and the fish was still attached ! Paul quickly retied the line to the rod and the fight was on ! We landed a 13 pound king.
Our total for the trip was 8 kings 10 to 16 pounds,2 browns 1 went 11 pounds, and 5 - 2 to 3 pound Coho. The Boat ran good and it was a Great day on the water.

we fished a half day and tried to duplicate Friday's catch but the wind switched to the east and the fishing slowed a bit. we did manage to limit out again ,2 nice kings, 3 nice browns ( one brown went 11 pounds 10 ounces ) and 5 Coho. we fished 20 to 40 fow till 10 am then I but the bout up in the troughs on the beach. red stingers were best on a 6 foot rigger with a 5 foot stretch. rapalas were going as well.

Had a mid day trip today, the lake was pretty calm and the sun was high. the fishing was less than red hot and we lost fish in any shape and fashion possible. we had 12 or 14 bites and boated 2 fish one king and a Coho. I guess every body has these days. still was a great day off the dock. We fished from the pump house to the condo's, dolphin's were the best on low divers in 35 fow.

Tried to fish the same water I did yesterday but the wind made my fish disappear. But luckily Ed gave me a call and clued me into some fish. went 5 for 9 or 10 with 2 Coho and 3 kings to 18 pounds. best action was on green and blue dolphins. ( the new ones I just got from Raider sthingys) 30 to 40 fow north of the light was best. half cores and thin red fins took there share of shots as well.

03/26/04

Well boys and girls I do believe our long winter is over. I kicked off the season today down on the Detroit river in the rain. Fishing was not spectacular but we managed 5 fish in the 4 to 6 pound range.

We fished the Trenton channel and all in all the traffic
was light. After this weeks rain I would expect water clarity to become a problem next week.

On the other side of the state The steelhead run is in full swing, with most south western rivers giving up good catches. Plugs and spawn seem to be doing  the trick.

The big lake season is only a few weeks away, and I can't wait to throw a couple cold water Coho's on the grill.
