Lake Erie's Western Basin
May 27- June 2, 2004
The fish are finally starting to
realize that they are there to be caught! There are bites
everywhere from the Islands to Toledo Shipping Channel.
Walleye concentrations are North
West of West Sister, around the range Cans and we are starting
to pull fish in the flats west of the Islands.
Bottom Bouncers with purple blades,
gold and firetiger in heavy water are working well. Countdown
methods fished on the swing with weapons and crawler rigs are
producing well from a 10 count down to the bottom. Lots of fish
coming high now.
Trollers are doing well everywhere
with spoons and dive baits.
Weather has been a factor but fish
are cooperating well even in bad weather. Watch for pop up
storms in the afternoons on humid hot days.
Perch are coming around Niagara and
the Islands, especially the yearly hot spots above Kelly's.
Some bites have been hot enough to
melt your line so if your not catching, keep moving and you will
have no doubt your on the hot spot when you get there!
Tip of the week:
Remember to check all of your safety
gear that is required by the Coast Guard. Safety should always
be first. At the gas dock there have already been some
accidents in which there were no spark arresters or blowers over
the carburetors of boats. A fire at the gas dock is not a
pretty site. Exhaust all gas fumes from the engine compartment
with your blowers before your fire up that engine. That extra
minute or two will allow you many days to come, unlike the
anglers last week that didn't take the time to clear the housing
before they fired up.
Good fishing,
Captain Troy

FISH ON
May 20-28th
Folks are starting to see puffs of
smoke coming from Lake Erie's Western Basin again. From the
Toledo Water Intake to Port Clinton around the cans pockets of Hot
Fish are being hit. Trollers are smoking walleye pulling dipsy
divers and jets with spoons dropping gear and trolling for 4 miles
at a crack before turning around or just pulling in gear to be
done. Speeds are 1.9-2.5 and action is fast. Drifters are
finding hot pockets and making short drifts to work the fish
hard. The bite can be over as fast as is started if pressure
becomes obvious by passing boats overhead. Waters are clearing up
fast. Use inline spinners, weapons and bottom bouncers with
crawlers in depths from 20-25'.
Hottest spots seem to be the range
cans and the flats around the west island.
Perch anglers are working deeper
waters and around the reefs of Naira and Toussaint with good
success. Kelly's island seems to be the hot spot.
Tip of the week:
The packs of boats are rapidly growing
in size. For the sake of life, do not motor through these packs
full steam ahead. Your wake can throw a young angler overboard or
ruin the hot bite for all. More important. There is a new range
of No Entry Zone in plain English, around the Davis Besse Power
Plant. One mile of water all the way around is off limits. Enter
it and expect the Coast Guard to board your vessel and issue a
ticket payable to the government.

May 7-18th
Walleye are showing up everywhere from
the Shipping Channel to the Islands to Camp Perry Firing range. The
jigs were put away this week until next year with bites coming on
bottom bouncers and crawlers and weapons with crawlers. Colors of
choice for the blades are purple, gold and firetiger. Drift bottom
bouncers 1ft off the bottom and cast weapons with a slow retrieve
from the bottom up. The fish are scattered but showing more numbers
than last week in small schools pulling a couple fish per drift.
Good reports came from the firing range and every can surrounding
the firing range. Expect some coast guard presence around the
cooling tower of Davis Besse with a no enter zone around it 1 mile.
Be sure to listen to the radio for open firing range schedules and
do not enter it if they are live on camp Perry.
Trollers are having great success in
deeper waters, the flats west of the Islands and from the reef
complex to Toledo. Bigger fish are coming around the islands and
further east. Spoons behind Luhr Jensen jet and dipsy divers are
top choices with some trollers pulling crank baits and husky jerks
up high for suspended fish. Bites are fast early morning and become
slow and scattered come high sun.
Perch anglers are having good bites
North of the Island of Kelly's and off Marblehead. Reports came
from Toussaint and Niagra and the Shipping Channel along the
turn-a-round buoy.
White bass reports have been slow from
the rivers but exist using shinners and twister tail jigs.
Tip of the week:
Buoys and danger markers are there for a
reason. Be sure to check your lake charts and do some homework
before entering the lake. No your rules of the road and who has
right of way. With more traffic on the lake and expectations of a
busy season, safety should always be first. Several reports of
downed vessels and accidents for failing to follow the rules of the
road have had heavy costs for some folks. There are Rules of the
Road established by the US Coast Guard. Find out what they are and
abide by them.

FISH ON!
May 6th-13 2004
Weather, weather and even more weather
have been some obstacles this week. Storms are the norm lately,
slowing what bites we have. Transition from spawn has walleye lock
jawed most everywhere on the west end with only occasional bites that
are over again as fast as you find them. Water clarity is an issue
for shallow fish so deeper waters have been the answer to meat in the
box.
Trollers are pulling fish in deeper waters
from the reefs to Green Island and farther east to vermillion.
We have taken the minnow wells home until
the fall perch season brings them back out. Fish bottom bouncers and
crawlers. Purple blades have been good as well as firetiger.
Slow jig presentations with crawlers has
taken some fish and starting to see several come on weapons. Bites
are early just at sun up. Sleep in and its work!
A couple days of stable weather will allow
fish to regroup but until then, prepare to keep moving only to take a
fish here and there.
Perch anglers are getting good bites from
toussaint reef and Niagra as well as north of kellys and out of Huron.
Tip of the week:
When fishing for these walleye we have got
to keep from running over top of them. When your in a pack of boats
and your going for another drift, make a wide swing around them and
back to your starting point. If you run through that bite it will end
it for everyone. We have been on good bites every morning only to
have it blown by engines running through the middle instead of
around. Increase your catch and motor outside the pack!

FISH ON!
Lake Erie fishing report April 28th-May 5th
Weather and transition from spawn were major
obstacles this week.
The walleye are spawned out and finished,
making moves with scattered small pockets of fish from the Reef Complex
to the Maumee Bay and no HOT SPOTS so to speak.
The Maumee bay & the Reef Complex offered
scattered bites that were over as fast as you sat down. The reef
complex is starting to see smallmouth and still producing some eyes.
Concentrate on waters from 9-18' in depth
for your best bites and plan to move often to keep catching eyes. They
are making the transition over to spinners and crawlers. Over the last
2 days we caught no fish on minnows. Jigs tipped with worms and
crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers were top producers this week. With
the ever changing weather, schools are scattered and will begin to
regroup once the transition is over with good weather predicted for the
next few days. We are starting to see fish around the deeper cans.
Trollers are working stick baits and spoons with bigger fish being
produced from the Islands east to vermillion.
White Bass are now in the rivers but bites
are not yet in full course.
Perch jerkers are still having good catches
but slowed up some due to weather and spawns. The Marblehead area and
Kellys are best bets.
Tip of the week:
The season of warm weather is here. Heat &
Humidity with high dew points spell STORMS. Plan your trips early this
week due to late afternoon pop up storms with high temps and keep open
ears to the weather bands for early warning signs of coming weather. Do
not wait until the sky is dark over your heads to decide a storm is
coming. One more cast could be your last. Never leave your port
without an up to date weather forecast.
Good Fishing,

April 20-27th 2004
Many anglers were limited this week due to wind and even snow with the
sever front moving in but is moving back out just as fast for the weekend.
The Walleye spawn is all but over with White Bass now being picked up in
the Rivers, however it is not a full swing bass run. Some eyes are still
remaining in the rivers due to food source but most are back in the lake
or on there way. Water temps are now in the low 50's. The maumee bay is
still seeing good action as well as in front of Davis Bessee, around K-
Can and off most reefs. Reefs are producing less fish than open water.
Bigger fish are being caught by trollers off the edges and around the
Islands with some Fish Ohio eyes being reported using plugs and spoons.
Starting to see some action from spinning rigs and bottom bouncers which
is an indication that the fish are becoming more active. Some fresh eyes
are still coming from deeper water to shallows with little color to them
but expect it is the last run we will see this year. Heavy winds and a
severe cold front will slow the bites some but should rebound quickly for
weekend bites. Expect some good wave action over the next week and a
change in your program to take good numbers. Some nice smallies are being
picked up shallow along the shore lines. We now have many reports of eyes
from Maumee to Huron by trollers which is a sign the spawn is for all
practicle purposes over. We caught some nice fish off of west reef which
has always produced exceptional quality. Bring some crawlers and spinners
this weekend to back up the jigs, transition is upon us and will cross
over to spinner presentations rapidly if the weather remains warm as
predicted.
Perch are now up on the rocks or staged close for spawns with some slowing
in action. Action should pick up again with the best bites coming from
Marblehead and Kelleys Island and around Niagra.
A tip for drifters. I see a lot of good bites go south due to bad
decisions or even excitement to do it again. When you are on your bite
and swing up for another drift, do not motor up through your bite you are
leaving. These fish are pressured and all it takes is some motor noise to
move them and the bite is over. Pull wide to either side of the drift and
then back to your beginning position to start again. Never motor through
your bite and you will maintain good action more often.
Good fishing
