Had a wonderful day Monday. Out by myself, and met fellow guide Greg Reedy on the water. We fished mostly in Buck, but went in to other areas as well. Water is slightly stained to clear and running in the low 80’s. We targeted edges and drops in the 4ft to 8ft depth ranges using a variety of baits from buzz baits to grass frogs, on top, to txrigs and flukes. Best colors had some green in them, as is typical for this lake. I boated 15+ fish from small to a decent 6lber. Also got my rear kicked by a good fish in a Cedar. Greg also lost one to the cover, and I do not know how many he and his two companions ended up with. I called it a day about 1pm. Bite ranged from a good hit to just weight on the line, so you had to be on your toes. With the cooler weather moving in the fish and bait are wanting to move. It won’t be long before they will all be in the shallows and easy to catch. Hope you can get out soon. Till next time.

Good Fishing and

GOD BLESS

05/10/04

Sorry this is late but with Mothers day, I had things to do yesterday and did not get this out. Went out Saturday and found a lot of fish, but only up to 4lbs. Had most of them early but did boat fish till about 2pm. Most of them came on buzz baits and spinner baits, in chartreuse/white. I am doing the same thing I did this time last year, and going after fish no one else is willing to go after, by that I mean I am fishing the dingier water, and father back in the major creeks than most. Saturday I was the only boat in the area for most of the morning. The water is off colored, and 70 to 75 on the temp. I did catch fish in the clearer water in other parts of the lake on flukes around the grass, but the bite was slower, and more difficult to feel with the wind.

This time of year you will find fish in every stage of their cycle, pre-spawn, spawn, post-spawn, and major feed. It will depend on what part of the lake you are on, and the structure you are fishing. If you are looking to catch numbers, then target areas that you expect the spawn to be well over, if you want bigger fish, but less bites, then target areas that you can find pre-spawn fish as they will still have most of their egg weight. I normally do find spawning fish on this lake in to June, and some times July. This lake normally has the spawn move from North to South. By that I mean, the fish in the far upper ends of the lake go first and it seems to move down from there. If you look closely at the grass in Indian, you will see lots of VERY small fry, which should give you a clue.

Till Next Time

Roberts is doing very well this year so far. Went Saturday, and saw some beds in some areas, and staging fish in others. I try to let the bed fish do their thing, but I will watch them for a time, to see if the females are up. The only fish I saw on beds Saturday were males. I managed to catch 8 fish up to 9.3, on spinner-baits and jig-n-pig. Water temps get warmer as you go north, from 55 to 60 depending on where you are. I am using the spinner bait over the millfoyal that has not yet turned green, and the jig where ever I think there might be a staging fish. (I.e. first cover or ledge off a flat, next to deep water) I did not have my camera for a picture of the 9.3 but a guy fishing out of a Cajun boat was kind enough to take pictures for me and is going to e-mail them to me. When he does they will be on my web site. She was not even ready yet but was in very good shape at over 23" long.

I do apologies to those of you who went to Bass Pro Shops Spring Fling looking for Jimmy Martin's new map, there was some kind of snafu and they did not get in the show. Right now you can go to " The Dam Store" on the west end of the dam at Ray Roberts and they have a good supply on hand.

Till next time

Good fishing and

GOD BLESS

02/10/04 - This is going to be rather short. Lake is down about 3'; water temps are from 42 to 44 degrees. Most of the weather as of late has been more like winter and moved the fish out to deeper structure. Fishing is tough but will pick up soon. Sand Bass are holding in 35 to 40 ft of water at the mouths of the major creeks.

Jimmy Martin has sent his new map of Lake Ray Roberts to the printers and it should be ready early in March. This will be the most accurate and detailed map ever made on this lake. Two years and thousands of pictures (taken when the lake was 17.5ft low) have gone in to this map. You can get more info on it at www.martinsmap.com.

I will be at Academy in Arlington for "Meet The Pro" on the 19th, 20th, and 21st. Come by and we can talk Fishing.

Till next time

Good Fishing and GOD BLESS.
